Christian Unger

Geoinformatics specialist working where energy infrastructure meets data. Focus areas: data models that let departments work on their own, automation of recurring procedural steps, and spatial analysis of large, inconsistent datasets. Background in Digital Humanities with a focus on spatial data analysis — specialised in turning complex geospatial and infrastructure data into usable systems and dependable decisions.

Professional experience

May 2024 – present Freiburg, Germany

Geospatial & Grid Access Manager · IT Manager

iAccess Energy GmbH

Three areas of responsibility in one role: geoinformatics, grid connection and IT.

  • Ownership of the company's grid connection procedures across the entire process — from initial enquiry to binding commitment, across several grid operators and voltage levels, for a project pipeline in the triple-digit megawatt range
  • Automation of procedural correspondence through an AI-assisted data pipeline: incoming messages and attachments are captured, parsed and assigned to the right case — multi-stage procedures stay fully documented without manual work
  • Design of the company's central working system: a bespoke data model with an application on top, through which several departments jointly manage projects, procedures and correspondence — instead of scattered mailboxes and individual filing
  • Build-up of an end-to-end data model of utility infrastructure from operator records: obtained, referenced, digitised — the basis for site assessment, route finding and the protection of existing lines
  • Processing of large geospatial datasets — LiDAR, digital terrain models — as a basis for planning and decisions
  • Central responsibility for IT as the only specialist in the company: communication and collaboration standards, servers and hardware, IT security
  • Scaling through method: technical leadership of part-time staff who work productively on their own through the models and processes I built

Oct 2023 – Jul 2024 Part-time, remote

Research Associate

Mainz University of Applied Sciences

  • Halved the processing time of a 7,000-entry research dataset by redesigning the data workflow
  • Moved the complete holdings into public access following open data standards

Apr 2020 – Mar 2023 Mainz · Part-time

Research Assistant

Academy of Sciences and Literature, Mainz

  • Member of the three-person project team “Deutsche Inschriften Online”: moving the long-established publication series “Die Deutschen Inschriften” onto a digital research platform — from preparing analogue typesetting to developing the platform in front and back end

Apr 2013 – Oct 2019 Mainz · Alongside studies

Archaeological Field Technician

General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, Rhineland-Palatinate

  • Over six years on archaeological excavations in Mainz — fieldwork, find documentation, topographic surveying and the digital processing of results

Oct 2016 – Apr 2018 Mainz · Part-time

Assistant Manager

Games Workshop Ltd

  • Independent management of the branch and support of the store leadership in retail operations
